Ready to capture some BEAUTIFUL memories this Halloween? Check out this Halloween Photoshoot guide on how I created this MAGICAL photo of my kids with their pumpkins.
Your kids are only little once and it’s so important to capture special memories when you can. Professional photographers are amazing and totally worth it but it’s unrealistic to have them around at every memorable moment.
That brings us to this guide. I’m sharing with you how I photographed and edited this magical photo of my kids with their pumpkins so you can too!
HALLOWEEN PHOTOSHOOT EQUIPMENT
Just in case your new around here – I AM NOT A PHOTOGRAPHER. Techniques that I use are just a collection of knowledge I’ve gathered from articles just like this one and used to my best ability. Keep that in mind as you ready along. My equipment? That’s all listed below!
CAMERA

I have an older version of this camera that I plan to upgrade very soon. I couldn’t find a good link with new ones available so I found the closer version at the best price and linked it above.
The best part about this upgrade?
These devices are able to share photos to your device right from the camera itself. That means no more plugging the memory card into your computer and then emailing yourself the photos!
LENS

This is an “off brand” lens and I have to say I love it. It’s lower cost than other 35mm lenses but it still works wonderfully! Great for mom-tographers 🙂
LIGHTING

These are the lights I used for our pumpkins. Nothing fancy, just simple everyday items that you more than likely have! You can also use Christmas lights for your Halloween photoshoot that have green cord rather than white.

CAPTURE
Lets start with capturing the photos.
First, you’re going to want to stage the area. Pick the location in your house, stage your pumpkins and plug in your lights.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You want the light to be visible on your kids faces. I suggest running the lights along the bottom of the pumpkin and also wrapping them around the top stems. If you don’t have enough lights for this, take the tops of the pumpkin off so the glow from inside is able to reflect off your kids faces.
Once your area is staged, adjust your camera settings. Mine are below.
Now, you’re ready for some fun! Get your models ready and start snapping away!

ISO 6400 | SHUTTER SPEED 1/250 | FSTOP 2.0
EDITING
I used 3 tools to edit this photo. You should be able to find all of these apps in your app store on your phone.
LIGHTROOM
LENS LIGHT
RETOUCH
LIGHTROOM
This is where I applied my Jessica Kettle presets, adjusted light, shadows, highlights and my whites until I created the desired look. I also increased sharpness and used noise reduction to give the photo a smoother look.

RETOUCH
The Retouch app allows me to remove unwanted distractions. See if you can spot what change I made below 😉

LENS LIGHT
Finally onto Lens Light. This is where I added those beautiful bokeh orbs to give my photo an EXTRA magical touch. You’ll have to play around in this app for a while to get the effect justttttt right!
