DIY Christmas Banner

My favorite part of this DIY Christmas banner craft is that it can be customized for almost any occasion! Christmas decorations are expensive as is and with trends changing, its hard not to invest more and more money every year.

This craft can be reused year after year or tossed after your holiday celebration since it’s such a low cost project! You can customize this banner to be made up of different shapes, different colors and even different textures! To take it to the next level, try adding some colorful pom poms to create a Christmas Garland feel!

Let’s Get Started

You do need a couple supplies to complete this craft. The most expensive of all being the Cricut machine. This baby is a big investment but as a mom of 4, it is a staple piece in our home. Right up there next to our KitchenAid Mixer! 😀

In the supplies area below, I’ve listed everything needed for this DIY Christmas banner craft including the Cricut accessories. These accessories should come with your machine when you purchase.

Supplies Needed

  • Cricut Machine
  • Cricut 12x 12 cutting mat
  • Computer to use Cricut Design Space
  • Cardstock
    • I used THIS FINE GLITTER CARDSTOCK for my girls
    • I used THIS SOLID COLOR CARDSTOCK for my son
  • String or Ribbon
  • Tape

Directions:

  1. Plan out your project. Decide what phrase you would like to create on your banner or what shapes you’d like to use! Then, decide which of your colors you are doing to use for each piece.
  2. Connect your Cricut to your computer and open Cricut Design Space.
  3. Click on + NEW PROJECT
  4. Using the text tool (red box in photo below) add the letters you need for your first color of card stock. Choose your font and adjust the height as needed.
    • In my image, you can see I made L, A, A and F in the Verdana font with 4.5in as my height (see pink boxes). Make each element in a separate text box for ease of positioning when cutting.
  5. Now that your letters are complete, its time to get ready for the cut! Check to make sure that the operation for each of your letters is set to basic cut (blue box).
  6. Place your first color cardstock on your cutting mat and press down firmly. If your cardstock is only colorful on one side, place the colored side down to the sticky section. If your cutting mat is old and doesn’t have much stick, tape the outside edges of the cardstock to your mat to prevent movement during cutting.
  7. Click on Make It and arrange your letters as desired. Be sure to click on MIRROR if your cardstock in blank on the back.
  8. Before cutting, turn the knob on your Cricut to custom and then select Craft Cardstock to cut. When cutting the glitter cardstock, use MORE pressure.
  9. Once your cut is complete, pop off your colors and repeat with additional cardstock until you have everything you need!
  10. Line your banner up and tape string to back OR use a hole punch and string together.
