Here we go again… we’re building a home in Michigan! This build is a lot different than our build in South Carolina and I am so excited to share this experience. In this post I’m sharing how we got here and a couple of my favorite spaces from our Bluffton, SC home.
Why We’re Building a Home in Michigan
Whew, it’s hard for me to even believe it. We’ve been in Michigan since late 2022 and have been renting a small townhome while we figured out the next best step for our family. We’ve been addicted to Zillow & Pinterest since we decided to move back and trying to pick the right spot to be our next “forever home.”
Over the years we’ve lived all over the place including New York, California, South Carolina and now, back to Michigan. We decided our next home would be long term so our kids could settle down and grow up in one place. Those are the choices that made us decide building a home in Michigan was the next best step.

Building a Home in Michigan
As some of you may know, we also built our home in South Carolina. The SC build was a lot different then our soon-to-be Michigan home. In South Carolina we built an Express Build which basically meant we picked a floorplan, a lot and a color package and that was it. There were literally no custom choices in that house which honestly worked great for us. We were in a rush to get in a home and from signing to move in only took 8 months. While they are different experiences, there are some similarities.
- Pre-determined floorplans to choose from
- All new EVERYTHING!
- Great warranties
Living in a brand new home was amazing. Even though it was builder grade, we literally had zero issues outside of a couple nail pops. And guess that? Those were covered under warranties with our builder. We loved that we were the first family to live there. Our previous home was over 50 years old so the living experience was completely different.

Building a Home in Michigan Details
Now onto the fun part! Sharing details and next steps for our build. When we decided to build we had two highly desirable options in mind.
Option 1 – Build on the water
Option 2 – Build on a large piece of property
We loved both of these options and really took a long time to decide which would be best for us. Both have their own positives and negatives and both were realistic options for us based on our location in Michigan. In the end, we decided to build our “forever” home on the water!
I’m so excited to share our new home will be built on a small lake in Michigan and we can still hardly believe it. A lake home has been a dream of ours since we lived in Michigan the first time as a family so it really is crazy to see it come to fruition. Our kids are so excited to move and I cannot wait to make this house a home for them for years to come. I look forward to sharing progress on the house with you along with things we learn along the way.
